Folkart

Maihaugen has an extensive collection of folk art objects from Gudbrandsdalen. This was objects in daily use, and with rich decorations that are typical of the valley.

In the collection site includes:

  • beercups and bowls 
  • locks
  • tapestry
  • costumes
  • bride crowns

 


Objects in use

Most folkart was created for everyday use and the feature to have a decorative function through a fine decorative or beautiful form

The collection tells about the diversity, creativity and about the skilled craftsmen. The urge to decorate was particularly strong because folkart is connected to festivities, food and drink. Large parts of the collection of folkart is from the classical period in Gudbrandsdalen in 1700 - and 1800.

Acantusdecor (akantusskurd)

This wooden decor made in Gudbrandsdalen are known in the folkart as "akantusskurd", and have its main location in this walley. In the Collections and exhibitions there are many examples of wood carving works of talented folk artists who Jákup Sætersdalen from Lom (1756-1821) and Kristen Listad from South Fron (1726-1802) are two well known craftsmen.
