The main task of the Secretariat for Rare and Protected Crafts (SSV) is to maintain, strengthen and pass on crafts which lead to an apprentice certificate.
Finding enterprises which can provide teaching can be challenging for some of the crafts, and it is important that the applicant is strongly motivated. The work of NHU relating to rare crafts covers the entire country, but the individual county councils are responsible for approving training enterprises and training contracts.
After input from SSV, the Norwegian Directorate for Primary and Secondary Education decides which crafts should be considered as rare and protected. The presence of a rare craft on the list triggers the payment of an extra supplement to training enterprises which accept apprentices. A higher supplement is one tool for ensuring that traditional craft skills and knowledge are passed on through the regular training of new practitioners.
