Register of craftsmen and craft enterprises

The national register has been in existence since 1987, but was re-established in 2001 as a modern new database with a scope that records a wide range of information on craftsmen.

Some of the information in this register is available on the Internet. The register is searchable and it provides craftsmen and women with an excellent marketing channel, which can be used for providing references. The register is continually updated and the guidelines for management of the register are approved by the Norwegian Data Inspectorate.

There are a number of good reasons for maintaining such a register:

  • Historically to manage information about craftsmen, who either have or previously have had a mastery of a craft or technique. It is therefore important to include master teachers and references.
  • To help private individuals and organisations with a defined need to have skilled work carried out to a high standard. This could involve anything from a major construction project or restoration to ornamental or utility objects.
  • With the aid of the register, we can make craftsmen and women aware of emerging and exciting projects
  • The register also acts as an information channel for network-building between such professionals.
  • The register is an important tool for NHU to find tradition-bearers and specialists who can take part in new documentation- and training- projects and further competence-building.
